French Bulldog Age FAQ

Use our calculator above. Enter your Frenchie's age in years and months. We apply the DNA methylation formula (16 × ln(age) + 31) with a medium-breed multiplier for accurate results.

What is the lifespan of a French Bulldog?

French Bulldogs typically live 10–12 years. With proper care, weight management, and regular vet visits, some Frenchies reach 14 years.

When is a French Bulldog considered a senior?

French Bulldogs become seniors around age 8–9. At this point, bi-annual vet checkups and a senior-formulated diet are recommended.

What health issues do French Bulldogs face as they age?

Frenchies are prone to brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS), hip dysplasia, spinal issues, and heat sensitivity. Weight management is critical — even minor obesity dramatically worsens breathing problems.

French Bulldog Aging Guide

French Bulldogs are a brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed classified as small-to-medium, typically weighing 20–28 lbs and standing 11–13 inches tall. Their compact body and affectionate temperament make them ideal apartment companions. Despite their small size, they age at a medium breed rate, reaching full maturity around 18–24 months.

The most critical health concern for aging Frenchies is their respiratory system. Their shortened skull creates airway narrowing that worsens with age and obesity. Keeping your French Bulldog at a lean weight is the most important thing you can do for their long-term health and comfort. Avoid heat and humidity, which can trigger breathing crises in older dogs.

French Bulldogs also develop spinal problems (IVDD) with age. Low-impact exercise, ramps instead of stairs, and maintaining a healthy weight all help protect their spine. Begin semi-annual vet checkups by age 7, including respiratory assessments and spinal evaluations.
