Our calculator uses the latest veterinary research — specifically the DNA methylation formula (16 × ln(dog age) + 31) published in the peer-reviewed journal Cell Systems by researchers at UC San Diego. We've enhanced this formula with breed-size multipliers based on extensive lifespan studies.

Sources & Research
Our dog age calculator is based on the DNA methylation formula published in the peer-reviewed journal Cell Systems (2019) by researchers at the University of California, San Diego. The study, led by Dr. Tina Wang and Dr. Trey Ideker, analyzed the DNA methylation patterns of 104 Labrador Retrievers across their lifespan to establish a biological clock for dogs.

How it works: DNA methylation is an epigenetic modification that changes predictably with age. By measuring these changes, researchers can estimate biological age more accurately than chronological age alone. We apply breed-size multipliers (0.85× for small, 1.0× for medium, 1.15× for large, 1.30× for giant) based on extensive lifespan studies across breeds.
